Recently, the research and development of a new intelligent throat swab sampling robot system jointly initiated by the team of Academician Zhong Nanshan and the Shenyang Institute of Automation has been completed. In the first phase of clinical trials, the effective sampling of subjects with uniform sampling intensity has been achieved, and progress has been made. .
Use intelligent robot sampling to avoid cross infection
According to the “New Coronavirus Pneumonia Diagnosis and Treatment Plan (Trial Version 7)”, the diagnosis of new coronary pneumonia requires 2 positive nucleic acid test results, and the patient’s recovery and discharge requires 3 negative nucleic acid test results. Throat swabs are currently the most important sampling method for diagnosing new coronavirus infection.
During the operation of throat swab, medical staff must have close contact with the patient, which has a higher risk of cross-infection. In addition, in the process of collecting throat swabs, the quality of the swabs is prone to false negatives due to differences in the level of medical staff, changes in mental status, and irregular operation specifications, which affects the judgment of the condition.
In order to solve the problem of cross-infection in the collection of biological samples from patients with the new coronavirus and ensure the quality of sampling, the team of Academician Zhong Nanshan and the Shenyang Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences jointly proposed an intelligent robotic throat swab sampling solution. Beginning on New Year’s Eve, led by Professor Li Shiyue, the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, the team of Professor Liu Hao from the Shenyang Institute of Automation, and Shenyang Shuchi Medical Technology Co., Ltd. have collaborated to urgently develop a throat swab sampling robot.

The new intelligent throat swab sampling robot system consists of a snake-shaped mechanical arm, binocular endoscope, wireless transmission equipment and human-computer interaction terminal. The robot can gently and quickly complete the task of sampling the pharyngeal tissue by means of remote human-machine collaboration.

The robotic system was formally applied to test subjects in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University on February 28. The first phase of clinical trials with 20 subjects has been carried out, and 80 samples have been collected. Cytological test results show that robotic throat swab sampling can achieve high quality, with a one-time success rate of greater than 95%, effective sampling and uniform sampling intensity, and no adverse reactions such as redness, swelling and bleeding in the throat of the subjects.
This research focuses on manipulating robots in direct contact with human tissues, which is beneficial to avoid infection of medical staff, improve the standardization of biological sample collection, and ensure the quality of specimens.
On March 8, the team conducted a robotic throat swab sampling test for the first time a confirmed positive patient.
