Recently, at the launch event of “Guangzhou Laboratory Science and Technology Helping Grassroots Epidemic Prevention and Control”, Zhong Nanshan, director of Guangzhou Laboratory and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, answered a number of public concerns about epidemic prevention and control on the spot.

Zhong Nanshan said that cold weather is a very good opportunity for the virus to grow and spread. One is the temperature problem, which is the problem of the living environment; in addition, generally when the weather is cold, more people gather in the room.

Zhong Nanshan talked about the epidemics that occurred in Jilin, Hebei, and Heilongjiang and the necessity of strict prevention and control measures. He pointed out that we should see that the number of patients in Jilin and Hebei far exceeds the epidemic that occurred in Beijing in June this year. The epidemic ended in 27 days and there were about 300 people. Now it seems that the situation of the spread of the epidemic is relatively severe. One of the reasons is that the cold winter weather is conducive to the survival and spread of the virus.

Zhong Nanshan said that according to the prediction of the new crown epidemic prediction model developed by Lanzhou University, under the strong government intervention, the epidemics in Jilin, Hebei, and Heilongjiang will be basically controlled in early February. If strict prevention and control measures are not taken, 130,000 people in Heilongjiang will be infected by the end of February, and 120,000 people in Hebei will be infected by the end of February.

Zhong Nanshan mentioned that there are contradictions in taking (strict prevention and control) measures against the epidemic, and there are contradictions if no measures are taken, which is a dilemma. But just like abroad, once the measures are relaxed, the epidemic will immediately rebound.
