Unlike traditional swabs that consist of a “wad” of cotton or synthetic fiber wrapped around the tip of an applicator, a flocked swab features a spray-on technology.
Using a process called electrostatic deposition, thousands of short nylon fibers are permanently attached to the tip of the applicator. These fibers are aligned perpendicularly, resembling the bristles of a soft brush or the “fuzz” on a tennis ball. This unique structure creates a highly absorbent surface with no internal mattress core to trap the sample.
The secret to the effectiveness of a flocked swab lies in capillary action. Because the nylon fibers are standing upright and parallel to one another, they act like a sponge for liquid and cellular material.

Flocked swabs solve this problem through “elution.” Because there is no internal core, the specimen stays on the surface of the nylon bristles. As soon as the swab is placed in a liquid medium, it releases over 90% of the collected sample almost instantly. This ensures that the laboratory has the highest possible concentration of the specimen to work with.
